Japanese kickboxing

Developed by Osamu Noguchi in the mid 1960s, Japanese kickboxing is a hybrid martial art. It is a combination of karate and Muay Thai techniques. The basic rules of kickboxing are similar to those of Muay Thai. Kicks are allowed to the legs, head, and body. Jumping kicks to the body are awarded three points and foot sweeps are awarded one point. However, clinch fighting and spinning backfists are prohibited.

The first kickboxing event took place in Osaka, Japan, on April 11, 1966. It was the first combat sport to adopt the name “kickboxing”. It was created by Japanese boxing promoter Osamu Noguchi and was based on the rules of Muay Thai. In the initial form, kickboxers could use dirty tactics, but this was banned in 1966 to improve safety.

American kickboxing

During the 1970s, American Kickboxing was a fairly new style of combat sports. It originated from karate mixed with boxing. Several different national kickboxing associations were formed in the United States, France, Thailand, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Kickboxing matches are conducted according to the American rules, which appear to be relatively safe. In these types of matches, fighters use kick boots and boxing gloves. The bouts last about two minutes, with a one-minute break between rounds.

To protect themselves from incoming punches, kickboxers wear shin guards under long pants and a pair of boxing gloves. They also hold their forearms outwards to protect their head.

American kickboxing rules limit the use of elbows and knees. However, a fighter can use a sweep to throw an opponent to the ground.

Dutch kickboxing

Developed in the Netherlands, Dutch kickboxing is a hybrid of Kyokushin karate and Muay Thai. It’s one of the best styles of kickboxing and MMA. It combines high volume punching with knee strikes to the body, step-in knees, and a superman punch.

Dutch kickboxing was born in the Netherlands in the 1970s, after Dutch karatekas studied Kyokushin karate in Japan. Jan Plas and friends opened a gym in Amsterdam. The Mejiro Gym, named after the Tokyo district, became the pioneer of Dutch kickboxing.

The main weapon of Dutch fighters is their low kick. This Kyokushin-style full-force kick comes across the thigh and lands with the shin. It’s a simple but effective technique.

Another stalwart of Dutch kickboxing is the jumping knee. This technique is also used in MMA, and has the distinction of being one of the fastest and most effective kicks.

K1-style kickboxing

Whether you’re new to kickboxing or are looking to refine your striking techniques, K1-style kickboxing classes are a great way to start. In K-1, the emphasis is on kicks. However, kicks are also allowed to be caught as a defensive manoeuvre.

K-1 matches are contested in a 6 m by 6 m square ring. Kickboxing matches are scored by three judges on a ten point system. Each round lasts for three minutes. If there is a draw, the match continues for another round.

K-1 has a very specialized striking tool set. A K-1 fighter is allowed to throw knee strikes and elbows, but is not allowed to hold an opponent to deliver a strike. A K-1 referee has the authority to stop the fight.
